Is the time ripe?
A few weeks after Apple has completed its annual operating system transition and the initial 'storm' has subsided, many people are considering whether an upgrade is worthwhile or not.
What's new in macOS Sonoma?
- The update is automatically offered and can be easily installed.
- New are widgets, which are interactive elements that can be placed on the desktop. They display weather forecasts, appointments, timers, and other information.
- Video conferences have been improved.
- The Safari browser supports profiles for different work environments, allowing you to separate cookies and settings.
- The font size of apps can be individually adjusted.
- The Safari browser automatically prevents tracking attachments when sharing web pages.
- Improvements have been made to password management, filling PDF documents, and iMessage search.
Should I perform an upgrade?
As new computers always come with the latest system installed automatically, without a downgrade option, sooner or later you will inevitably be faced with an operating system change. Fortunately, in 90% of cases, upgrading to the current macOS goes smoothly. It is essential to perform a Time Machine backup before the upgrade to keep the option for a downgrade open.
The last 10% usually refer to programs that also need an update to function smoothly on the new system. By using the latest system, you also stay on the safe side regarding security updates.
After the upgrade is before the upgrade
A particularly pleasant aspect of a macOS update is that all settings remain intact. Emails, appointments, browser links, and even recently opened Safari windows can be easily accessed after the update, as if nothing happened.
If you can ensure that only current software, compatible with the new system, is used, I would always recommend upgrading to the latest system.
What do you think? Upgrade, yes or no?
